Using a digital soil pH tester is one of the quickest and most accurate ways to check your soil’s pH. Follow these simple steps to get reliable results and understand what your lawn or garden needs to thrive.
What You’ll Need
A digital soil pH tester (available at garden centers or online)
A clean trowel or small shovel
A clean container or zip-top bag
Distilled water (important for accurate readings)
A clean cloth or paper towels

Step-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1: Choose the Right Area to Test
Identify areas of your lawn or garden where plants aren’t growing well or where you plan to plant something new.
For a more comprehensive result, test multiple spots and average the readings.
Step 2: Collect a Soil Sample
Use a trowel or small shovel to dig a sample from the top 2–4 inches of soil.
Remove any grass, roots, or debris from the sample.
If testing multiple spots, mix the samples together to create a composite for consistent results.
Step 3: Prepare the Soil Sample
Place a portion of the soil in a clean container.
Add distilled water to the soil (just enough to make it damp, like mud).
Mix the soil and water gently.
Step 4: Clean the Digital Tester
Wipe the tester’s probe with a clean, damp cloth to remove any residue from previous tests.
Make sure the probe is completely dry before proceeding.
Step 5: Insert the Probe into the Soil
Push the probe into the damp soil sample until the sensor is fully submerged.
Hold the tester steady and wait for the digital display to show the pH reading (this usually takes 30 seconds to 1 minute).
Step 6: Record Your Results
Write down the pH reading for each area you test.
For multiple readings, calculate the average to determine the general pH of your lawn or garden.
Step 7: Clean the Tester After Use
Wipe the probe clean with a damp cloth to remove soil and moisture.
Store the tester in a dry place to keep it in good working condition.

Interpreting Your Results
pH Below 6.0 (Acidic): Your soil may need lime to raise the pH.
pH Between 6.0 and 7.5 (Neutral): Ideal for most lawns and plants. Apply only a balanced fertilizer!
pH Above 7.5 (Alkaline): Consider adding sulfur or organic compost to lower the pH.

Why Digital Testers Are Great
Accuracy: Digital testers provide more precise readings than DIY methods.
Ease of Use: Simple to operate with quick results.
Reusable: A one-time purchase that lasts for years with proper care.
